Arctic animals are adapted to extreme conditions. Many animals that spend the winter on the Arctic tundra like the Arctic fox have a coat that thickens and changes colour to white during the winter as camouflage in the snow. Open water is scarce, so they should satisfy their thirst with snow. Some animals hibernate during the cold season; they go into a very deep, sleep-like state in which their heartbeat slows down. These animals often hibernate in an underground burrow or pit. Thousands of years of evolution have prepared the Arctic wildlife species like the polar bear, walrus and snow fox for life on and around the sea ice.\r

Many polar animals spend the summer months in the Arctic, but leave as the weather turns extremely cold and food becomes scarce. They return again the next summer, repeating this pattern every year. This behavior is called migrating.\r

The Arctic is a very cold, windy, and often snowy biome located around the North Pole. The warmer Arctic region which is called the Low Arctic Zone supports the majority of life. The Arctic has a wider variety of animal life than Antarctica. The North Pole is in the middle of the Arctic Ocean which is surrounded by the land masses of North America, Europe, and Asia so there is a land connection meaning that land animals can more easily reach the Arctic.\r
